The demand for Botox injections is growing at an astonishing rate. It is the most popular cosmetic procedure in America, with more than 7.5 million injections each year — and it’s no wonder why!
Botox aesthetic treatment has been proven to be a safe way of reducing wrinkles on your face without having to undergo surgery or other invasive procedures. The results are long-lasting, too – you can expect them to last and keep you looking great for up to three months after treatment.
And if you’re worried about how much time will go by before you see any visible effects, don’t worry: Botox works quickly to enhance your appearance, reduce the signs of aging and prevent future signs from settling in.
What Is Botox?
Botox is an injectable form of the neuromuscular endotoxin botulinum toxin type A. This cosmetic treatment blocks nerve signals that cause muscles to contract and relax. When injected into specific muscle groups, this helps smooth out lines and creases around the eyes, forehead, nose, mouth, chin and neck.
How Does Botox Work?
When injected into specific muscles, Botox blocks nerve signals that cause muscle contractions that occur when you make facial expressions like frowning, squinting, wrinkling, puckering, furrowing, blinking and pursing lips. As a result, Botox injections prevent those muscles from contracting, which reduces facial lines and wrinkles. In addition to this, Botox also relaxes the underlying tissue, making skin appear smoother and more youthful.
What Areas Can Botox Treat?
You may have heard people talk about “facial expressions” when they mention Botox. These are areas where many small muscles move together as one unit. When these muscles contract, they create certain facial features such as frowning, smiling, raising eyebrows, etc., which, over time, cause wrinkles, horizontal lines on the forehead, lip lines, and glabellar lines and creases to develop.
Botox can help treat several facial areas, including:
• between brows
• around eyes
• under-eye area
• mouth corners
• upper lip
• lower eyelid
• nose tip
• nasolabial folds
Injections of botulinum toxin have also been approved for treating other conditions, including drooping eyelids and medical conditions such as neck pain, cervical dystonia and overactive bladder.
How Does Botox Prevent Future Facial Wrinkles?
If you want to look younger than ever, you need to start taking care of yourself now. Getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods and working out can help you stay youthful, but it’s OK to get a little help, too. Botox can help reduce the potential for future facial wrinkles, frown lines and glabellar lines by preventing the dynamic facial expressions you make. Botox achieves this by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles, which can prevent wear and tear on your skin, leading to wrinkles, lines and creases.
What Should I Expect at My Botox Appointment?
At our office, we take pride in providing personalized service to every patient. We understand that each person comes to us with their own unique needs and goals, so we strive to provide the best possible experience for all our patients.
At your Botox appointment, our aesthetician will examine your face and recommend the number of units needed and the ideal placement of the injection sites. Next, she’ll discuss what kind of results you’d like to achieve and answer any questions you might have regarding the process. Once she determines the optimal locations for the treatments, she’ll apply numbing cream to ensure maximum comfort during the procedure. Then, using a fine needle, she’ll inject the botulinum toxin directly into the targeted muscles.
You should feel some mild discomfort immediately following the procedure, but it shouldn’t hurt afterward. Afterward, you’ll receive instructions on proper post-procedure care and be given a prescription for aftercare products.
Will My Face Look Different Right Away After Botox?
It takes anywhere from three to six months for full results to occur, depending on the individual. However, the most noticeable changes usually happen within a few days of receiving your initial treatment. You’ll notice changes to your frown lines and facial wrinkles quickly.
Afterward, you’ll receive instructions on proper post-treatment care and follow-up visits. You may notice slight redness or swelling right away, but if not, don’t worry — it goes away quickly! Your doctor will give you additional injections periodically throughout the year to maintain the effects of your first session if you like your results.
How Long Does Botox Last?
While some patients report seeing immediate results following their first injection, others notice changes within two weeks. Most patients experience noticeable improvements within four to six weeks, with full benefits lasting anywhere from three to six months. After that point, however, the effect begins to fade away.
If you want to maintain your new look longer than expected, we recommend getting regular treatments every four to six months.
Are There Side Effects to Botox?
Botox and other types of botulinum toxin injections are extremely safe. In most cases, patients do not even experience redness or bruising at the injection site. Allergic reactions are very rare.
Is Botox the Same Thing as Dermal Fillers?
No, the Botox cosmetic treatment is designed to temporarily paralyze facial muscles adjacent to the treatment area. This temporary paralysis is designed to stop the development of facial wrinkles.
Dermal fillers are different. These aesthetic procedures are designed to help fill in areas of lost volume. Dermal fillers can be used in the same area as Botox and other types of botulinum toxin type A injectables, but play very different roles in treating and preventing the signs of aging.
